SUMMARY:Sinews in the Cypress: Our Year in Review
DESCRIPTION:In this installment of Sinews in the Cypress\, we explore the environmental rollercoaster of a year that was 2021 in New Orleans. We will be joined by Logan Burke\, the Executive Director of the Alliance for Affordable Energy\, and Aron Chang\, an urban designer\, co-lead at the Water Leaders Institute\, and member of the Civic Studio Cooperative. Logan Burke brings expertise in energy policy and is a leader in many different types of environmental advocacy occurring in the city and region. Aron Chang is at the forefront of water policy\, with a particular focus on living with water\, and he brings a technical and creative expertise that few can match. Both of our esteemed guest speakers are deeply knowledgeable and involved in environmental work — we are so honored to have them join us in exploring some of the year’s trials and tribulations through their perspectives. The event will be moderated by our Earth Rising Coordinator\, Zachary Lang. \nWe hope to highlight some of the most important environmental work that is going on in the region and discuss possible areas for our community to stay involved. \nWe hope to see you there! \n——————————————————————————- \nThe name Sinews in the Cypress speaks to the deep ties that Louisianans have to their environment and more specifically the wetlands. The Bald Cypress is the state tree of Louisiana\, a staple of the most prevalent ecosystem in the state and is one of the most ubiquitous and broadcasted species found throughout the state. In the environmental world it is ambassador for the wetlands and Louisiana. The Bald Cypress is also extremely resilient\, much like the population of Louisiana\, and is resistant to decay\, often called the wood eternal. The term sinew has two connected yet different meanings. First\, it is used to describe a piece of tough fibrous tissue uniting tissue to bone as well as bone to bone. The other definition for a sinew is the part of a structure or system that gives it strength and binds it together. The term sinew gives a humanistic vision to the project as well as a show of strength and resilience that the people as well as the Louisiana environment display. Lastly\, when the bald cypress grows in the swamps it develops a unique texture that is often described as sinewy\, resembling tendons in person.

DESCRIPTION:Community Medicine & Mindfulness Meditation \nAs part of our AAPI Rising series\, we’d like to invite you to join VAYLA’s end-of-year community check-in. Our Executive Director\, Jacqueline Thanh\, MSW\, will lead a meditation for us to turn our attention within. After another long year of complex grief across our diasporic community\, we are holding space for our personal and collective wellness to guide mindfulness in an effort to find care and strength from one another. \nOur AAPI Rising series is a storytelling\, workshop initiative born in the midst of the pandemic and heightened anti-Asian hate. Through our shared stories and community\, we aim to humanize Asian Americans and find commonality in our experiences as we explore questions of identity\, place\, and empowerment. #AAPIRising continues today by leaning on our community\, supporting one another\, and taking care of ourselves through spaces such as these. \nWe hope to see you there! Julia is the CEO and founder of ISeeChange\, an award winning climate change tech company. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Asian Pacific American History Month with VAYLA through our environmental justice conversation led by AAPI women leaders!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us this May in a conversation about the intersectionality involved in coastal restoration and life here in Southern Louisiana. \nZachary Lang\, VAYLA’s Earth Rising Coordinator\, will moderate a discussion between Cyndhia Ramatchandirane\, MS and VAYLA’s Executive Director Jacqueline Thanh\, MSW. Cyndhia is a staff scientist with Earthjustice\, an environmental law firm\, whose expertise lies in coastal restoration and the oil and gas industry’s impact on the Louisiana environment and communities. Jacqueline is a trauma-informed social worker by training\, with a focus on global health administration and policy. \nTogether\, our conversation will weave the intricacies of social sciences at the intersection of critical environmental issues and its impact on our communities. We will dig into how coastal restoration and oil and gas impact us on individual and community levels and explore ways to promote inclusivity and community involvement. \n  \nFor this event we will limit the number of attendees to create a more intimate atmosphere to foster a more open and conversational dialogue.

DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce our April event in our interactive speaker series on April 7th\, 2021. This month we are exploring a variety of issues from sustainability to community organizing to green infrastructure\, focusing on our own community of New Orleans East. \nIt is important that we continue elevating AAPI voices and experiences through our work and platform. For this discussion we are honored to host Khai Nguyen\, the co-founder of Veggi Farmers Cooperative and a project manager at MQVN Community Development Corporation. VAYLA and Veggi Farmers Co-op both sprouted from events of environmental injustice in our backyards. As our communities survive through multilayered traumas\, we continue building and thriving.
