DESCRIPTION:Join us for our September Cha and Chat meetup! ✨ We’re bringing together three storytellers and culture bearers for an evening of film screenings\, zine readings\, and oral histories. We’ll wrap up with a mini zine workshop creative session where folks can explore their own storytelling interests and projects! \n🎬 Marion Hill (she/her) is a Vietnamese-British-French filmmaker based in New Orleans. Following up on two popular short films [Bird of Prey and Goddess House]\, ​her narrative feature debut Ma Belle\, My Beauty premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and received the NEXT Audience Award. Marion always prioritizes discovery in her work\, centering queer and spiritual creative processes and an immersive approach to storytelling. \n🌱 Carolyn Sideco (she/her/coach) is an Ancestral History Healing Guide for @bayoubarkada\, a New Orleans group that connects Filipinos to each other through ancestral herstories of Southern Louisiana. Bayou Barkada is a project of The Philippine American Women’s Association of Louisiana (PAWAL). \n📖 Aanya Kapoor (any pronouns) is a Reproductive Justice Intern at VAYLA\, fourth-year student at Tulane University\, and curator of the Ginger Roots Zine. Their interests lie in decolonial literature\, feminist praxis\, and (diasporic) storytelling in community. \nCome celebrate our storytellers and the expansiveness of AAPI experiences here in the Gulf South! DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday 3/31 for an #AAPIRising Community Vigil and Healing Meditation for Asian Women and Femmes. This community vigil and meditation is in honor of the eight lives lost in Atlanta last year\, the lives lost due to anti-Asian violence\, and the generations of grief we carry and hold for our loved ones. We invite our community to heal and envision a future with us by tapping into generational strength and resilience. \nNAPAWF conducted a study surveying 2400+ women in-language\, which showed 74% of AAPI women experienced racism. Additionally\, 38 percent also reported having experienced sexual harassment\, and 12 percent said they experienced gender- or race-based physical violence. This is unacceptable and painful. \nIn the face of ongoing grief and continued violence against Asian women and elders\, we invite you to come together in this sacred space. Together we will breathe into our fears and hurt in order to bring life into our healing and nurture our collective strength. DESCRIPTION:To kick off upcoming celebrations for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month\, VAYLA’s next AAPI Rising Conversation will center the Taste of Resilience and Community! \nJoin us on May 17th for an afternoon of storytelling with our special guests: \nVAYLA’s Executive Director\, Jacqueline Thanh\, MSW will be moderating a deep dive conversation between two innovative AAPI about their experiences and journey in New Orleans and beyond. \nThe talk will include Stephen Deaderick\, PhD  Assistant Director in Student Affairs at Tulane University and the local food and travel influencer behind @thenola15 and Vivi Nguyen\, Founder of Radical Joy Bakery. \nFood is storytelling without words. VAYLA is casting a space to story share during this time of heightened collective grief and consciousness. Food is deeply rooted in AAPI traditions across the diaspora and has always held significance in our community’s joy and resilience. How can we continue to nourish and feed each other? AAPI food and culture is constantly being fetishized and consumed and survives through invisibility. What can resilience and what does joy taste like for US?
